The city of Oruro, Capital of the Department of the same name, it occupies the central part of of the highland of Bolivia.

 

It was founded on November 1, 1606, with the name of Villa San Felipe de Austria for Manuel de Castro y Padilla. Initially it had few habitants that lived mainly off the extraction of minerals. 399 years after that date, the city grew in an unstoppable form, but the populational increase goes harnessed with high indexes of poverty.

ImageThe city has 236.110 inhabitants. A part of the population migrated to Santa Cruz's cities, Cochabamba and La Paz, or to countries like Argentina, Spain and United States, in search of new horizons.

The city of Oruro, is 3.706 m.s.n.m. and it extends, in North-South projection, on a plan bowed toward the east sector , being in lathe of a serranía that has as important hills likeo: San Felipe,Pie de Gallo (Formerly denominated Pie de Gallego), San Pedro, San Cristóbal, Tetilla, Santa Bárbara, Cerrato and others.  

It is the first rail center of the country, of where the route begins toward the south of the country, arriving to Uyuni, Tupiza and Villazón frontier with Argentina.

Its wealth in culture and folklore makes of this city an attractiveness of first level for the national and international tourism.

 

The women are a fundamental pillar in the economy orureña. For example, the trade union sector is conformed for around 20.000 merchants who help or they even sustain to its families.
